on to the inside

I sanded down the countertops and oiled them. They're made of the same old barn floorboards that I used for the stairs. The countertops get mineral oil once a month or so.

I was just wondering if all you did to this counter was sand and oil it. We're in the process of remodeling an old farmhouse and the laminate countertops will have to come out. We're trying to come up with an inexpensive fix for right now. If we did wooden countertops, could we really just sand the wood and oil it monthly? Let me know if you get a chance and don't mind sharing your wisdom. Thank you.

Yep, that's it Melanie. Sand them down and use mineral oil about once a week. I smear it on and let it soak in for a few hours and then wipe up the excess. You can't leave standing water on them or it will raise the grain. If that happens, just sand it down and apply more oil. Since my wood was so old and had some major cracks in it, I mixed melted paraffin wax with the mineral oil and spread that on as a first coat to fill in the cracks. With the thickness of wood that I'm using, I think they will last through a lifetime of sanding and oiling and abuse.
